Questions to
Ask Your Mom
Now that you know so much about Mom—her central characteristic, her likes, her pet peeves—you will be able to approach the following questions with more ease and comfort. You now know why you want to ask these questions and why they are important. It is not that the questions themselves are important. Instead, what matters is that the answers you get from her will add to the reservoir— that body of knowledge—that tells you about Mom. You might think you already know her, but you will be surprised at how much more you learn once you start to talk with her about her childhood, her dreams and goals, and so on.
This is not a notebook to fill out just so it is finished once you have written something on every page. There are no grades, and no one is going to evaluate what you have done (or not done) when you are finished. The only one who will know how well you did is you. What you are doing is gathering information to preserve your mom’s legacy today so you will have no regrets tomorrow. We don’t know how much time we will have with our moms, so it is imperative that we gather and record as much as we can now—while we can. If this indicates a sense of urgency, then you have gotten the message. Don’t wait to talk with Mom—get started immediately!
In case you need a reminder on how to ask the questions, turn to the earlier section “How to Use This Book.” There, we gave you some tips on how to start the conversations with Mom; we also gave you three ways to gather the same information if your mom is deceased. That section is a good refresher to read any time that you have set the book down for a while before picking it back up to start asking some questions again. Just like a good tool, this book is valuable only if you use it.
